Historical Context:
In 1974, Victorian Railways introduced the JQF class wagons to facilitate quarry traffic between Kilmore East and Westall. These wagons were specifically designed for transporting quarry products, featuring open frames with sloped sheets and basic discharge systems. The train, known as "The Apex," operated between Apex Quarry near Kilmore East and unloading points at Westall and later Brooklyn. Typically, the service consisted of 18 JQF wagons and a guards van at each end to simplify shunting operations. In later years, modifications included adding sheet metal to the ends of the wagons to prevent rocks from accumulating.
Over the years, the fleet expanded and underwent several reclassifications. In 1994, wagons from the VHCX, VHDX, and VHRX classes were converted to VHQF, increasing the fleet size to 50 wagons. The "Apex" train continued to operate under various operators, including Freight Australia and Pacific National, until Qube Logistics assumed control of the service in 2016.
